Take the kids to the polls, let them see your sample ballot and share your ideas about the issues with them at their level. Don’t forget to let them know that there are more than 2 parties and more than just the Presidential race to vote for. Remind them of how hard and long the fight for the universal franchise was and still is. When our country became independent from Great Britain only 5% of the population was allowed to vote. That’s white men with property. Period. While our participation in civic life shouldn’t end with voting, it is a good place to start. It is definitely a “teachable moment”. If you don’t want to vote for the Republican or Democratic presidential candidate, there are several other parties on the ballot. Also, take time to notice the measures down ballot. They make a big difference.
