The students at Jefferson elementary in Berkeley, CA have been studying about Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King and the non violent direct action movements of the 1960’s. When their classmate, Rodrigo, didn’t come back from his Christmas vacation to visit family in Mexico, they discovered that he and his family had been stopped at the border as his father’s visa had expired. They were sent back to Mexico. Now they are not allowed back into the U.S. rodrigo has been here since he was 18 months old, speaks very little Spanish and is very popular with his classmates. His classmates have started a fund with the help of a teacher to send four of them to Washington to plead Rodrigo’s case. They have civil rights lawyers working with them. The website will tell you the whole story and tell you how to donate if you can. (An interview with the students and their teacher (or a mom) can be found archived at KPFA.org/MorningMix from 3/21/13 8 to 9AM.) www.bringrodrigohome.org
